Changsha Huanghua International Airport was built in 1986 in Huanghua Town, Changsha County, Changsha City, according to the 4D standard and was put into operation in 1989. Since then, the flight zone level has been upgraged from 4D to 4E. With the existing runway reaching 3,200 meters in length, Huanghua has become one of the nation’s major domestic airports, and it is the largest in Hunan Province. Its T2 terminal was officially opened on July 19, 2011. The construction area of the airport totals 212,000 square meters, ranked fifth nationwide, and its comprehensive infrastructure rank rose to seventh nationwide from fifteenth in 2010. The airport has a total of over 100 regular routes to 73 cities at home and abroad and hosts the operating bases of 31 Chinese and foreign airlines, including China Southern Airlines, Xiamen Airline Co, and OKAIR. There are over 2,700 flights (totaling 300,000 seats) that come in and out of the airport every week.
Following Hunan's economic and social development in recent years, Changsha Huanghua Airport, relying on increasingly frequent trade, tourism, exhibition and cultural exchange activities, has maintained a strong momentum of growth in transportation: the annual number of passengers exceeded 3 million in 2004, 5 million in 2005, 6 million in 2006, 8 million in 2007, and 10 million in 2009, 2010 and 2011, taking the lead in central China. It has become a large-scale airport with an annual transport capacity surpassing ten million passengers and is called " The Changsha Phenomenon" by the civil aviation industry. In 2010, it ranked 12th among all airports in China and first in central China.
Adhering to the principle "serving customers, improving ourselves, contributing to society", the airport, together with airlines and other units in the airport, has carried out innovative management over the years, gradually forming a relatively complete service system in terms of air command, air services, ticketing, check-in, security, maintenance, air cargo logistics, ground transportation, catering and entertainment. It has won the honorary titles of "National Primary-level Party Organization", "National Civilized Airport" "National Sanitary Airport", "National Leader in Building a Cultured Civilization" and "Civilized Unit in Hunan Province".
As Hunan promotes new-type industrialization, new-type urbanization, agricultural modernization and informatization, and construction of the "Two-Oriented" Society (resource-conserving and environment-friendly society), Changsha Huanghua Airport, based on the strong economic development of Hunan Province and Changsha City, plans to forge an "airport economy corridor" integrating logistics, trade, high-tech industry, etc. to develop a national first-class, environmentally friendly airport complete in function and facility.
